RESUMO

This overview assessed the available body of published peer-reviewed systematic reviews and meta-analyses related to the effects of active exergames compared with active/passive control on physical performance outcomes in older people. The methodological quality and certainty of evidence were assessed using PRISMA, AMSTAR 2, and GRADE. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (code: CRD42023391694). The main outcomes indicate that 4,477 records, five systematic reviews, and 10 meta-analyses were included. The AMSTAR-2 reported six meta-analyses with high methodological quality, four moderate quality, two systematic reviews with low quality, and three very-low quality. Meta-analysis was performed on balance using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and Timed Up-and-Go (TUG) tests, on cardiorespiratory fitness using the 6-min walk test, and on upper and lower limbs muscle strength using the handgrip strength, knee extension, and 30-s chair stand tests. Significant differences in favor of the active exergames groups concerning active/passive groups were reported in BBS (SMD = 0.85; 95% CI = 0.12-1.58; I2 = 96%; p = 0.02), TUG (SMD = 1.44; 95% CI = 0.71-2.16; I2 = 97%; p < 0.0001), and 30-s chair stand test (SMD = 0.79; 95% CI = 0.33-1.25; I2 = 88%; p = 0.0008). However, no significant differences were reported in favor of the active exergames groups in 6-min walk (SMD = 0.93; 95% CI = -0.64 to 2.50; I2 = 95%; p = 0.24), handgrip strength (SMD = 0.67; 95% CI = -0.04 to 1.38; I2 = 84%; p = 0.06), and knee extension tests (SMD = 0.20; 95% CI = -0.05 to 0.44; I2 = 95%; p = 0.12) compared to active/passive control. However, it was impossible to perform a meta-analysis for the variables of walking speed as a fall risk due to the diversity of instruments and the small number of systematic reviews with meta-analysis. In conclusion, interventions utilizing active exergames have shown significant improvements in the static and dynamic balance and lower limb muscle strength of apparently healthy older people, compared to control groups of active/inactive participants, as measured by BBS, TUG, and 30-s chair stand tests. However, no significant differences were found in the 6-min walk, HGS, and knee extension tests. Systematic review registration: PROSPERO, CRD42023391694.

OBJECTIVE: It remains unclear which individual or combined strategies are most beneficial for methamphetamine use disorders (MUDs). We compared the effects of aerobic exercise, attentional bias modification, and combined intervention on male patients with MUD. METHOD: One hundred male patients with MUD were randomly assigned to combined intervention, aerobic exercise, attentional bias modification, or control groups (25 patients per group). The 8-week intervention protocol included three 60-minute sessions of aerobic exercises per week. Primary outcomes included high- and low-frequency heart rate variability, executive function, and cardiorespiratory fitness measured by customized software, computerized tests, and the Harvard step test, respectively. Secondary outcomes included psychiatric symptoms, drug craving, training acceptability, and persistence. RESULTS: Participant characteristics were matched between groups at baseline. Executive function, heart rate variability, cardiorespiratory fitness, drug craving, and most psychiatric symptoms had significant time-group interactions at posttest (p < .05, η2 = .08-.28). Compared with the attentional bias modification and control groups, the combined intervention and aerobic exercise groups improved significantly in executive function, heart rate variability, cardiorespiratory fitness, and most secondary outcomes. In addition, high-frequency heart rate variability and cardiorespiratory fitness in the aerobic exercise group were significantly higher than those in the combined intervention group. CONCLUSIONS: Combination strategies showed comparable efficacy to aerobic exercise alone in improving executive function, psychiatric symptoms, and drug craving and significantly exceeded other conditions. For heart rate variability and cardiorespiratory fitness, aerobic exercise alone was the most effective. For acceptability and persistence, combination strategies were preferred over single-domain training and health education intervention.

Recent research has shown more favorable training adaptations for inactive adults when cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) exercise is prescribed with the use of ventilatory thresholds compared to percentages of heart rate reserve (HRR). However, there is limited research on changes in health-related outcomes with the use of these CRF methods in combination with muscular fitness exercises. The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of two training programs for improving CRF, muscular fitness, and cardiometabolic risk factors. Inactive men and women (n=109, aged 49.3±15.5 years) were randomized to a non-exercise control group or one of two exercise training groups. The exercise training groups consisted of 13 weeks of structured exercise with progression using either CRF exercise prescribed with the use of ventilatory thresholds and functional training for muscular fitness (THRESH group) or HRR and traditional muscular fitness training (STND group). After the 13-week protocol, there were significant differences in body weight, body composition, systolic blood pressure, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), VO2max, 5-repetition maximum (RM) bench press, and 5-RM leg press for both treatment groups compared to the control group after controlling for baseline values. However, the THRESH group had significantly more desirable outcomes for VO2max, 5-RM bench press, 5-RM leg press, body composition, and HDL-c when compared to both the STND and control group. Additionally, the proportion of individuals estimated as likely to respond above 3.5 mL·kg-1·min-1 in VO2max (i.e., the minimal clinically important difference) was 76.4%, 20.8%, and 0.13% for the THRESH, STND, and control groups, respectively. While both exercise programs elicited favorable health-related adaptations after 13 weeks, these results suggest that a personalized program with exercise prescribed based on ventilatory threshold and with the use of functional muscular fitness training may yield greater training adaptations.

The Cooper test (CT) is used to assess cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in pre-adolescents and adolescents, although it was originally developed to assess healthy adults. The aim of this study is to examine the available scientific evidence on the reliability and criterion validity of CT when administered to pre-adolescents and adolescents. Systematic searches were performed in three electronic databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, SPORTDiscuss and Scopus). To examine reliability and validity, four separate meta-analyses were implemented, finding high heterogeneity in studies with low methodological quality. There was a paucity of research regarding absolute reliability, while studies attempting to develop or cross-validate VO2max/VO2peak equations were almost non-existent. Information on the psychometric properties of CT in pre-adolescents under 12 years of age is scarce. The findings of this review cast doubt on the usefulness of CT both in identifying CRF and in determining the impact of strategies developed to improve CRF among pre-adolescents and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of neighborhood-level characteristics on cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) via peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) for healthy pediatric patients. STUDY DESIGN: The institutional cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) database was analyzed retrospectively. All patients aged ≤ 18 years without a diagnosis of cardiac disease and with a maximal effort CPET were included. Patients were divided into three self-identified racial categories: White, Black, and Latinx. The Child Opportunity Index (COI) 2.0 was used to analyze social determinants of health. CRF was evaluated based on COI quintiles and race. Assessment of the effect of COI on racial disparities in CRF was performed using ANCOVA. RESULTS: A total of 1753 CPETs met inclusion criteria. The mean VO2peak was 42.1 ± 9.8 mL/kg/min. The VO2peak increased from 39.1 ± 9.6 mL/kg/min for patients in the very low opportunity cohort to 43.9 ± 9.4 mL/kg/min for patients in the very high opportunity cohort. White patients had higher percent predicted VO2peak compared with both Black and Latinx patients (P < .01 for both comparisons). The racial differences in CRF were no longer significant when adjusting for COI. CONCLUSION: In a large pediatric cohort, COI was associated with CRF. Racial disparities in CRF are reduced when accounting for modifiable risk factors.

The aim of this study is to gain insight in the cardiorespiratory fitness of persons with lower limb amputation (LLA) during rehabilitation, and in potential factors influencing their cardiorespiratory fitness. We performed a retrospective cohort study using data from cardiopulmonary exercise tests. Included participants were adults with LLA. Main outcome was cardiorespiratory fitness expressed as O 2 peak (ml/min/kg) and was directly determined using breath-by-breath gas analysis. O 2 peak was compared to reference values for able-bodied controls. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to investigate potential factors related to O 2 peak in persons with LLA. Potential factors were age, BMI adjusted, gender, level of amputation, aetiology of amputation, unilateral/bilateral, type of ergometry and use of beta blockers. Data of 74 participants with LLA are presented; 84% male (n = 62), mean age 58.9 (SD 11.6), mean BMI 26.7 (SD 5.6), 44 participants have a LLA above the knee, 30 below the knee. Overall O 2 peak was lower in persons with LLA compared to reference values for able-bodied controls, with mean O 2 peak for the total LLA group of 14.6 ±â€…4.1 ml/kg/min. In the multivariate regression analysis, only age was a significant predictor for lower O 2 peak (regression coefficient: -0.15, 95% CI [0.23-0.069], r 2  = 0.166). These results indicate that the cardiorespiratory fitness in persons with LLA is low, while they actually need more energy to walk and perform other daily activities. Cardiorespiratory fitness is not closely associated with the analysed demographic or clinical factors and will have to be determined on an individual basis for use in daily practice.

RESUMO

Acute inflammation impairs vascular function in an age-dependent manner and affects cardiovascular event risk. Regular aerobic exercise preserves vascular function with aging and potentially modifies how acute inflammation affects the vasculature. We hypothesize high cardiorespiratory fitness may accompany greater arterial responsiveness post-acute inflammation in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Studies on the association between estimated cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and changes in metabolic risk in the Chinese population are limited. This study aims to examine the associations between CRF and changes in metabolic risk. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We included 4,862 and 2,700 participants recruited from 28 provinces in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in the baseline (Wave 1) and follow-up (Wave 4) analyses, respectively. CRF was calculated using sex-specific longitudinal non-exercise equations. Metabolic indicators included systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels. The metabolic score was calculated as the number of changes in the above metabolic indicators above the 75th percentile of the distribution of changes (equal to or below the 25th percentile for HDL-C). RESULTS: In the baseline analysis, CRF was negatively associated with SBP, DBP, TG, and FPG, and positively correlated with HDL-C after adjusting for age, smoking status, and drinking status (all P < 0.0001) in both males and females. In the follow-up analysis, higher baseline CRF was significantly related to a decrease in SBP, DBP, TG, FPG, and metabolic score (all P < 0.0005), and increased HDL-C (P < 0.0001) after further adjustment for corresponding baseline metabolic indicators. The associations remained significant after stratification by sex, except for the changes in HDL-C levels in females. Furthermore, improved CRF was associated with favorable changes in DBP, TG, HDL-C, FPG, and metabolic scores in all populations and males. Significant associations between changes in CRF and DBP, TG, and FPG levels were found in females. CONCLUSION: Higher baseline CRF and improved CRF were associated with favorable changes in metabolic indicators.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to measure the association between the physical activity (PA) levels and cardiorespiratory fitness on the firefighters' cardiac autonomic function at rest at the fire station. METHODS: Anthropometry, heart rate variability, fitness, and PA levels were assessed at the fire station in 98 career Québec male firefighters. RESULTS: Partial correlations, adjusted for age, waist circumference, and perceived stress revealed that heart rate and several heart rate variability indices were significantly correlated to estimated maximal oxygen consumption and to high-intensity PA but not to moderate-intensity PA. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that both cardiorespiratory fitness and high-intensity physical training are related to the cardiac autonomic function of firefighters. Therefore, fire department should promote PA programs to improve physical fitness among firefighters.

BACKGROUND: Physiological mechanisms explaining why cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) predicts cardiovascular morbidity and mortality are incompletely understood. We examined if CRF modifies vagally mediated heart rate variability (HRV) during acute physical or psychosocial stress or night-time sleep in adults with cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS: Seventy-eight adults (age 56 years [IQR 50-60], 74% female, body mass index 28 kg/m2 [IQR 25-31]) with frequent cardiovascular risk factors participated in this cross-sectional study. They went through physical (treadmill cardiopulmonary exercise test [CPET]) and psychosocial (Trier Social Stress Test for Groups [TSST-G]) stress tests and night-time sleep monitoring (polysomnography). Heart rate (HR) and vagally mediated HRV (root mean square of successive differences between normal R-R intervals [RMSSD]) were recorded during the experiments and analyzed by taking account of potential confounders. RESULTS: CRF (peak O2 uptake) averaged 99% (range 78-126) in relation to reference data. From pre-rest to moderate intensities during CPET and throughout TSST-G, HR did not differ between participants with CRF below median (CRFlower) and CRF equal to or above median (CRFhigher), whereas CRFhigher had higher HRV than CRFlower, and CRF correlated positively with HRV in all participants. Meanwhile, CRF had no independent associations with HR or HRV levels during slow-wave sleep, the presence of metabolic syndrome was not associated with recorded HR or HRV levels, and single factors predicted HRV responsiveness independently only to limited extents. CONCLUSIONS: CRF is positively associated with prevailing vagally mediated HRV at everyday levels of physical and psychosocial stress in adults with cardiovascular risk factors.

The aim of the research study is to assess the cardiovascular health benefits related to football in Brazilian adolescents. By assisting teenagers in maintaining a healthy body weight and lowering their risk of cardiovascular problems linked to obesity, these physical activities help control weight. Football regularly is also associated with better blood pressure control and advantageous metabolic profiles. For measuring the research, used smart PLS software and described results, including descriptive statistics, correlation coefficient analysis, and the smart PLS Algorithm model. In addition to their physiological advantages, team sports promote cardiovascular health due to their psychological benefits, including lowered stress levels and enhanced mental health. However, current studies carried out in the area should be examined to provide exact insights into the cardiovascular advantages in adolescents from Brazil. The overall result found that direct and significant analysis of the cardiovascular health benefits of football in Brazilian adolescents. As a result, even though the body of research highlights the potential benefits of football for youth cardiovascular health, more study that focuses on particular regions will be necessary to fully comprehend the connection between youth football participation and cardiovascular health in Brazil (AU)

Purpose: College students are the future of a nation; education community needs to prioritize students' health issues. Method:This article compares the measurement data of cardiovascular function, bone density, body composition, and physical fitness between female college students in the exercise group and the control group before and after 12 weeks, in order to explore the impact of basketball on human morphology and physiological function. This can provide more methods and scientific basis for students to enhance their physical fitness and promote physical health. Results: The exercise group's lung capacity after the experimentwas 2517ml, and the control group's lung capacity after the experiment was 2357ml.Conclusion: This article has important practical significance in promoting the improvement of college students' physical fitness, and can also provide reference for ordinary higher education institutions to offer various sports courses (AU)

INTRODUCTION: Firefighters are required to perform physically strenuous tasks such as hose drags, victim rescues, forcible entries and stair climbs to complete their public safety mission. Occupational-specific tasks are often used to evaluate the ability of firefighters to adequately/safely perform their duties. Depending on the regions, occupational-specific tasks include six to eight individual tasks, which emphasize distinct aspects of their physical fitness, while also requiring different levels of cardiovascular (CVH) and musculoskeletal health (MSH). Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between specific occupational task performance and measures of physical fitness, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, 282 full-time male and female firefighters were recruited. A researcher-generated questionnaire and physical measures were used to collect data on sociodemographic characteristics, CVH, MSH and weekly physical activity habits. Physical measures were used to collect data on physical fitness and occupational-specific task performance. RESULTS: Absolute cardiorespiratory fitness (abV̇O2max), grip strength, leg strength, push-ups, sit-ups and lean body mass (all p < 0.001) had an inverse association with completion times on all occupational-specific tasks. Age was positively related to the performance of all tasks (all p < 0.05). Higher heart rate variability (HRV) was associated with better performance on all tasks (all p < 0.05). Bodyfat percentage (BF%) and diastolic blood pressure were positively associated with the step-up task (p < 0.05). Lower back musculoskeletal injury (LoBMSI), musculoskeletal discomfort (MSD), and lower limb MSD were associated with a decreased odds of passing the step-up. Upper body MSIs (UBMSI), LoBMSIs and Lower back MSD were associated with decreased odds of passing the rescue drag. CONCLUSION: Firefighters that were taller, leaner, stronger and fitter with a more favourable CVH profile, higher HRV and less musculoskeletal discomfort performed best on all occupational-specific tasks.

Adults who have had obesity from childhood are at greater risk of obesity-related comorbidities compared to those who only develop obesity in adulthood. The main way of mitigating these risks in obesity is with weight loss, which has been shown to positively affect the cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and body composition of adults. However, it is unclear whether the response of these outcomes to weight loss may be influenced by age of obesity onset. The objective of our study was to investigate how age of obesity onset mitigates the responsiveness of CRF, muscle strength and body composition to modest weight loss. Measurements were conducted at baseline and 12 weeks. In total, 37 participants (childhood-onset = 19, adult-onset = 18) lost 3.7% ± 0.4% through aerobic exercise and diet. The YMCA cycle ergometer test (YMCA) and the 20-m shuttle run test (20MSR) were used to estimate CRF (mL kg-1 min-1 ) and a handgrip dynamometer was used to estimate muscle strength. Total body composition was assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Overall, CRF and body composition improved (time effect: p < 0.05) after 12 weeks. There was no group-by-time interaction for YMCA, 20MSR, muscle strength and body composition variables. Therefore, the present study suggests that individuals with childhood-onset obesity and adult-onset obesity can improve their CRF and body composition similarly after mild weight loss.

OBJECTIVE: Blood pressure (BP), cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), and body composition are independently associated with health outcomes, yet the relationship between these variables has not been explored among airline pilots. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between CRF and BP, and further examine whether the relationship is mediated by body composition. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 356 airline pilots in New Zealand. We measured height, body mass, BP, waist circumference, skinfolds, and CRF (via a WattBike cycle ergometer submaximal VO 2max test). Partial correlation coefficients were estimated to examine the relationships between all variables while controlling for age and sex. Haye's PROCESS macro and the Sobel test were utilized for the mediation analysis. RESULTS: All body composition variables (body mass index, waist circumference and body fat percentage) were positively correlated with all BP variables (systolic pressure, diastolic pressure and mean arterial pressure) ( P  < 0.001). CRF was negatively correlated with all body composition and BP variables ( P  < 0.001). The Sobel test and indirect effect were significant ( P  < 0.001), confirming that all body composition variables partially mediate the relationship between CRF and all blood pressure variables. CONCLUSION: Lower CRF is associated with higher blood pressure, and body composition partially mediates the relationship between these health risk factors. These findings highlight the importance of physical fitness and healthy body composition in the management of blood pressure among this occupational group.

Endurance training has been shown to be effective in treating adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD). To integrate endurance training into the therapeutic setting and the adolescents' daily lives, the current performance status of the adolescents should be accurately assessed. This study aims to examine adolescents with MDD concerning exhaustion criteria during a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET), as well as to compare the values obtained thereon with sex- and age-related control values. The study included a retrospective examination of exhaustion criteria ((i) oxygen consumption (V̇O2) plateau, (ii) peak respiratory exchange ratio (RERpeak) > 1.0, (iii) peak heart rate (HRpeak) ≥ 95% of the age-predicted maximal HR, and (iv) peak blood lactate concentration (BLCpeak) > 8.0 mmol⋅L-1) during a graded CPET on a cycle ergometer in adolescents with MDD (n = 57). Subsequently, maximal V̇O2, peak minute ventilation, V̇O2 at the first ventilatory threshold, and peak work rate of participants who met at least two of four criteria were compared with published control values using an independent-sample t-test. Thirty-three percent of the total population achieved a V̇O2 plateau and 75% a RERpeak > 1.0. The HR and BLC criteria were met by 19% and 22%, respectively. T-test results revealed significant differences between adolescents with MDD and control values for all outcomes. Adolescents with MDD achieved between 56% and 83% of control values.   Conclusions: The study shows that compared with control values, fewer adolescents with MDD achieve the exhaustion criteria on a CPET and adolescents with MDD have significantly lower cardiorespiratory fitness.   Clinical trial registration: No. U1111-1145-1854. What is New: • A relevant proportion of adolescents with major depressive disorder do not achieve their V̇O2max during a graded cardiopulmonary exercise test. • Adolescents with major depressive disorder have significantly lower cardiorespiratory fitness compared to sex- and age-related control values.

BACKGROUND: The physical demands of golf caddying, including walking while carrying a golf bag, may potentially affect body composition, and markers of metabolic, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal health. Therefore, this study examined the impact of 24 weeks of caddying on physical health in middle-older aged males. METHODS: Eleven full-time experienced male caddies (age: 59 [8] y; caddying experience: 14 [12] y) were recruited from a local golf course. The following were assessed at preseason and after 24 weeks of caddying (March-September 2022): body composition, heart rate, blood pressure, blood lipids, and performance tests (static and dynamic balance, strength, and submaximal fitness). Physical activity (PA) levels were assessed at preseason and at the mid-point of the caddying season. Across the caddying season, participants completed a monthly average of 24.0 (3.8) rounds. RESULTS: Following the caddying season, improvements in static balance (Δ = 13.5 s), dynamic balance (Δ = -1.8 s), and lower back absolute strength (Δ = 112.8 N), and muscle quality (Δ = 2.0 N·kg-1) were observed (all P < .05). Additionally, blood lipids, including total cholesterol (Δ = -0.6 mmol·L-1), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (Δ = 0.1 mmol·L-1), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (Δ = -0.6 mmol·L-1) (all P < .05), and body composition, including body mass (Δ = -2.7 kg), fat mass (Δ = -1.9 kg), fat percentage (Δ = -1.4%), fat-to-muscle ratio (Δ = -0.03), and body mass index (Δ = -0.9 kg·m-2) (all P < .05) improved. Caddying did not offer beneficial changes to cardiovascular variables or cardiorespiratory fitness (P > .05), while coronary heart disease risk score decreased (Δ = -3.3%) (P < .05). In relation to PA, light- (Δ = 145 min) and moderate-intensity (Δ = 71 min) PA, moderate to vigorous PA (Δ = 73 min), and total PA (Δ = 218 min) between preseason and the mid-point of the caddying season increased, while sedentary time (Δ = -172 min) decreased (all P < .05). CONCLUSION: Golf caddying can provide several physical health benefits such as improvements in various markers of cardiometabolic health, lower back absolute strength, and static and dynamic balance. The physical health improvements that caddying offers is likely contributed to by increased PA volume and intensity through walking on the golf course. Therefore, caddying may represent a feasible model for increasing PA volume and intensity and achieve physical health-related benefits.

INTRODUCTION: Given the health benefits and the role of exercise as an anti-inflammatory adjuvant program, this study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a combined exercise program on cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), body composition, and biochemical levels in adults with schizophrenia (SZ) characterized at baseline as metabolically unhealthy overweight with low CRF. METHODS: Participants diagnosed with SZ ( n = 112, 41.3 ± 10.4 yr, 28.7% women) were randomly assigned into a treatment-as-usual control group ( n = 53) or a supervised exercise group ( n = 59, 3 d·wk -1 ). Each combined exercise session consisted of both a low-volume high-intensity interval training (<10 min of high-intensity time per session) and a resistance circuit-training program. All variables were assessed before and after the intervention (20 wk). For the assessment of CRF, a peak cardiopulmonary exercise test on a cycle ergometer was used. RESULTS: After the intervention, participants from the exercise group ( n = 51) showed increases in CRF ( P < 0.001) through peak oxygen uptake (L·min -1 ; Δ = 17.6%; mL·kg -1 ·min -1 , Δ = 19.6%) and the metabolic equivalent of task (Δ = 19%), with no significant changes ( P > 0.05) in body composition and biochemical variables. However, the treatment-as-usual group ( n = 38) did not show any significant change in the study variables ( P > 0.05). Between-group significant differences ( P ≤ 0.05) were observed in CRF, first ventilatory threshold, and heart rate peak after the intervention period, favoring the exercise group. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that a supervised combined exercise program in people with SZ helps to maintain body composition values and improve CRF levels. This could lead to an important clinical change in the characterization from metabolically unhealthy overweight to a metabolically healthy overweight population. Hence, exercise should be considered a co-adjuvant program in the treatment of the SZ population.

OBJECTIVE: Higher cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) induces neuroprotective effects in the hippocampus, a key brain region for memory and learning. We investigated the association between CRF and functional connectivity (FC) of the hippocampus in healthy young adults. We also examined the association between hippocampal FC and neurocognitive function. Lastly, we tested whether hippocampal FC mediates the association between 2-Min Walk Test (2MWT) and neurocognitive function. METHODS: 913 young adults (28.7 ± 3.7 years) from the Human Connectome Project were included in the analyses. The 2MWT performance result was used as a proxy for cardiovascular endurance. Fluid and crystalized composite neurocognitive scores were used to assess cognition. Resting-state functional MRI data were processed to measure hippocampal FC. Linear regression was used to examine the association between 2MWT, hippocampal FC, and neurocognitive outcomes after controlling for age, sex, years of education, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, and gait speed. RESULTS: Better 2MWT performance was associated with greater FC between the anterior hippocampus and right posterior cingulate and left middle temporal gyrus. No associations between 2MWT and posterior hippocampal FC, whole hippocampal FC, and caudate FC (control region) were observed. Greater anterior hippocampal FC was associated with better crystalized cognition scores. Lastly, greater FC between the anterior hippocampus and right posterior cingulate mediated the association between better 2MWT scores and higher crystalized cognition scores. CONCLUSIONS: Anterior hippocampal FC may be one underlying neurophysiological mechanism that promotes the association between 2MWT performance and crystalized composite cognitive function in healthy young adults.

This study investigated the effects of 10 weeks of crossover point (COP) exercise training and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on cardiovascular risk factors and vascular health in overweight young women. Overweight young women were randomized into HIIT and COP groups. Participants in the HIIT group (n = 10; age = 22 ± 2, body mass index (BMI) = 25.72 ± 0.90) and COP group (n = 10, age = 21 ± 2, BMI = 25.90 ± 1.90) took part in 10 weeks of HIIT and COP exercise training, respectively. Cardiorespiratory fitness, cardiovascular health, and oxidative stress indicators were measured before and after the intervention period. After 10 weeks of exercise intervention, both COP exercise and HIIT led to a significant increase in maximal oxygen uptake (p < 0.001). The systolic blood pressure (p = 0.006), diastolic blood pressure (p = 0.006), and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (p = 0.002) were significantly decreased in both COP group and HIIT group, while serum interleukin-6 levels were increased in HIIT and COP groups. The present study shows that a training program at COP could be an effective strategy to protect vascular health.
